Default Can I mess anything up adding an air cleaner? '10 883

Hey all, this is probably a dumb question - I have a '10 883. Added gasbox customs 007 air cleaner, Also added breather bolts from Prism Supply. So everything went on pretty easily and lined up just as I saw in an instructional youtube video from lowbrow -

when I have ridden since then it seems all good, looks way better, but also there's like a deeper engine sound when i get hard on the throttle - it sounds more powerful or something? I also hear a faint swish noise sometimes which I'm assuming is the filter itself.

Is there anything I should be concerned with making sure I didnt mess up? I don't want that sound to be like, I don't know, engine pressure that's bad - or somehow ****ing up the engine otherwise

Probably a dumb question I just want to know what I can possibly mess up by having done this! Also - I have the stock pipes with the baffles punched. Bike pictured.

Thanks!

Intake noise is a BIG issue for manufacturers that takes clever design to reduce in order to pass overall MC noise regs...anyway what you are now hearing is probably normal for an open air cleaner. However an open air cleaner and freer flowing exhaust does mean that he engine will now need a richer mix so you will need XIEDs or a tuner etc. to make that happen. Running lean (and you probably are now) can be bad for your engine.
Google Sportster Stage 1 for for some ideas on what to do...

Do breather bolts just have holes in them to vent to atmosphere? That might get messy, most external breathers have some form of plumbing to directed vented output someplace else or into a catch can.

With a more open filter I think you are hearing the engine sucking air.

No. The engine does not need a richer mixture. If there is a change in airflow, it may need more fuel to achieve the SAME mixture, but the stoichiometric ratio of gasoline did not change because you changed your air filter.

Another dumb question but - what would be symptomatic of the engine running too lean? I'll look out for it

The stock pipes are still on there and all I have done is punch the baffles. Made it sound a bit throatier. Will likely upgrade pipes down the road and figured that's the point I'd need to use a stage 1 tuner

holes and an internal filter in these particular breather bolts. I haven't noticed any oil blow off on the bolts/AC/throttle body/my jeans yet, but it's early. I did read that keeping oil at 50% in the oil bag helps reduce any kind of oil venting problems with breather bolts.

Harleys are set lean from the factory to meet EPA standards.

And also with the breather bolts running the oil a little lower will reduce blow by mist.

The symptom of a lean engine is it runs hotter. It will have an instant response to throttle opening but on a long run it maybe noticeable that it loses power. You might notice a raspy note from the exhaust and not a clean sounding note.
