I think alot of it has to do with what you become accustomed to. You obviously are accustomed to being somewhat prone and feel that is the most comfortable for you when it comes to being "prepared". I've ridden both ways and each change in bikes and layout does require some getting used to but now that I've had my forward controls for over a year, and since I'm now more comfortable with that arrangement, I feel that is the best for being prepared. Also, it didn't take me a year to get comfortable with it. I flew 1700 miles to buy my bike and ride it back home. By time I got back I thought the forwards were great.

Depends alot on whether you want to do "laid back" cruising or "aggressive" riding.
As you can see in my sig pic, I really enjoy agressive twisty riding and find the forward controls work well for me. As most things Harley, it's personal preference. Again, a Harley was never meant to be a Crotch Rocket.

Why don't you go ahead and get the mid controls but, install some highway pegs as well. You would have pretty much the best of both worlds.
