Default Controls question

I am very close to buying my first street bike. Plan on buying the XL883. I have only ridden dirt bikes and have never ridden a bike with forward controls. Seems to me if you needed to stand for any reason, the forward controls would make that very difficult. It also seems to me that you since you are in a less prone position that your general readiness is less. Can anyone here shed some light on this subject for me? Can I get mid controls on the XL883?

Thanks in advance
Rob

unlike riding a dirt bike you should rarely need to stand up on it, i mean you are not going to jump. there are mid controls on it that are more like the riding position of a dirt bike. and a lot of people like that position. i would suggest you go to the dealer and and sit on both, and see if you can ride both. if not at the dealer, see if you know anyone with them

I've got a buddy that started with mid controls, then went to forwards, then extended forwards. He said each time it felt like he lost alittle more control, but they looked Cool.

I like riding country (twisty) roads, I'm keeping my mids.

I was afraid that would be the case. As a new street rider living in Houston, I am already leary about even owning a bike, much less having reduced control. I sat on a 883L with mids and it seemed a little cramped, I also sat on a 883 with forwards and it felt strange. The sales rep said I would get use to the feel, which I am sure I would but the mids just seem like a better idea. Really plan on using this bike mostly as a commuter bike with some fun rides thrown in on the weekends.

I would start with the mids, you can always go to forwards at a later date.

Whether or not mid controls would work for you has a lot to do with your height or actually your inseam. I rode mid control bikes for 20+ years and the first time I got on a Harley with forwards it felt kinda strange for the first day or two. Now, I can't stand riding with mids. It will have a lot to do with how tall you are, specifically your leg length (inseam), and the type of riding you do. Harleys are cruisers not dirt bikes so your need to find what works for you and is comfortablethe way you will be riding. I seldom have a need to stand up on the pegs but even though ittakes a bit more effort,I can still pull my *** up off the seat if necessary when crossing RR tracks etc. I'm 6'2" & a 32" inseam.

Once you go forward you can never go back. (or something like that)

Depends alot on whether you want to do "laid back" cruising or "aggressive" riding.

I dont really desire to be aggressive, just prone and prepared. I have been reading "Proficient Motorcycling" and frankly it has me a bit worried about my safety on a motorcycle.
