Default Is my fuel pump OK...or not ??

I have a 2007 XL50. I've read thru what seems like 100's of posts both here and on other forums, about fuel pumps going out. I just looked at my fuel pump, and it is the 75268-07"A" model.

From what I can gather, the 75268-07 was the original part, the 75268-07A replaced it, and the 75268-07B is the current production pump. I just looked at my wife's '08 883 and it had the "B" pump on it from the factory.

My "A" pump isn't giving any problems after 900 miles, NOR DO I WANT ANY! Is this pump the one that is giving the trouble? If so...I'll get the "B" pump and replace it. Don't want to get stuck on the side of the road 200 miles from home, you know? I'd much rather go ahead and pay my $300 now and fix it in my garage, at my convenience.

It is NOT the pump that is bad.... It is a faulty O-ring.... Take a chill pill and don't freak out about a small issue like this....

As far as the Part Numbers (07, 07A, 07B, etc...) those are merely revisions to certain parts or vendors that supply the components..... There is currently an -07C version.....

Here is an excerpt from a HD Tech Tip....
TT328 – August 9, 2007 – 2007 XL Fuel Pressure2007 XL Pressure Regulator / Low Fuel PressureWith the help of the dealer network we were able to isolate some recent no start and poor drive quality complaints caused by inadequate fuel pressure. On some ’07 Sportster models the fuel pressure has been recorded well below the servicerequirement of 55-62 PSI. This finding lead us to the conclusion the pressure was bleeding down past the large pressure regulator o-ring. In order to ensure proper positioning and minimize movement of the o-ring a new service kit has been introduced. Use labor code 7164 and order part number 61005-07, which consists of a “Castle” Washer, Filter Screen, 1 Small and 1 Large O-Ring and isintended for use on 75268-07/A/B Sportster fuel pumps. The “castle” spacer is installed with the openings pointing downward to prevent fuel flow restriction and should be only added to 75268-07B or earlier XL fuel pumps. Inspection processes were put in place prior to 2008 model launch, and in late August of 2007 XL production will be making a running change to a 75268-07C fuel pump. These fuel pumps will not require the “castle” spacer. The original regulator service kit (p/n 61015-04A) will remain available for situations requiring regulator replacement, service of a 75268-07C fuel pump or service of an already upgraded -07B and earlier pump.

Thanks for the info. But, this is NOT a small issue to me when I think about getting stranded somewhere by a failure that is not repairableon the road. Like I said, thanks for the info and the part #s. I'll get the O-ring kit and do the upgrade.

When you replace the O ring and parts let us know how the exchange went, parts price would be nice too.
Some pictures would be nice.

Where on the pump did you see the part numbers, without looseing the tank?
thanks
Tom

Tom, the number is on the pump itself. Look up under the tank on the left-hand side. The numbers are very evident once you look up there.

I seen it had to get the magnifying glass out . I doubt if H/D will recall the bikes for repairs unless someone can convince the NTSA that its a safety issue.

Thanks
Tom

You're probly right about them not doin a recall.

BUT...my dealer called me (and all others that had 07 FI models) and told me about the o'ring problem. Told me if i'd bring it in they'd do the fix. I asked when i could take it in and he said as soon as i could make it. The next morning at 9:00am they put me ahead of all other bikes (non fuel pump related) and had me out in 1 hr. This includes doin the new exhaust shield fix at the same time.

They had ordered enough kits to fix all the 07 Sporties they had sold.

Ya can't beat that for a good dealer.

Not sure if it's the same issue or not, but a co-worker got stranded with his 07 sporty due to fuel pump/regulator issues. Bike would not start, gas pouring out of exhaust. Had it towed in and found there was a service bulletin to replace part in FI. Dealer told them they were replacing it in all the bikes as they came in for regular maintainence, even if no problems were reported. Had to wait for a couple weeks due to high demand for part.
