Thanx, I think I will look for a total system.
Need something that is deeper tone but not that loud, I am not a Sporty Expert, most of my time has been on touring bikes so any input is appreciated
I would go Hooker. They were real deep and not too loud. At idle it was a nice deep rumble. Nice bagger.
In case slipons are still an alternative....Cycle Shack slipons have a real nice growl to them. I'm partial to the turnouts - I think they have the best sound of all the cuts but maybe its all in my head. For about $120-130 you can have uber nice sound and some good performance. Since they are slipons, you can keep the crossover, and room in your garage since you will only be storing stock mufflers and not the full exhaust.. Although CS has a full set too so that's another option.
I put CS slipons on both my Sportys and love them. In truth, my Sporty was supposed to get an RBR 2-1 system and the CS mufflers were an interim fix. But I've decided to keep the CS slipons and the RBR system will go on the Springer. I really think the CS mufflers are that good.

If you want "not that loud" then V&H won't be for you unless you also buy and fit a set of quiet baffles. They are a little quieter and slightly deeper with the quiet baffles in, but with standard baffles they are loud and crisp. Personally, I thinkV&H sound great on a Sportster, but they may not be what you are looking for.
I have to say that I don't really understand what it is you have against the balance pipe. I don't know, however, which model year your wife's bike is so don't know if you are referring to a high-level or low-level balance pipe. I have the balance pipe in place with slip-ons on my 07 and most people, including myself, don't even notice it. It just looks likeit's part of the lower frame. All the stuff I'veread saysa balance pipe will help the engine perform better. I've never read anything that says it will make it perform worse.
I have to recommend Pipe Dreamz... They are the ONLY maker of Sportster only custom exhaust systems... And the service is un-paralleled... Ask for the owner - "Ben".... He will be more than happy to answer any questions... I have a set of Wet Dreamz for my Nightster, and they sound and perform incredibly well.... Here is a link
