Default Need help on first bike! Sportster or Dyna?

First off hello from sunny california! Ok here is the deal I am finally in the position to be able to buy a bike but not sure wich way to go. I really love the looks of the street bob but the problem is that this is gonna be my first street bike and i am worried the dyna may be to much for me. The guy at the dealer said that it is a easy bike to ride but last thing I want is to have a damaged street bob for sale! This is why I am considering a sportster as my first bike.I really like the 1200 custom i think its a great looking bike but dont know if a 1200 is to much to start with also i dont know if i want to spend that kind of money on a bike that i will probally only ride a year or two. Also I have been told that sportsters are "girls bike" and that I may encounter some negativity from other riders. Any way any info would be greatly appreciated especially to help narrow down my decision on wich sportster to buy. Thanks

"girl's bikes".... grrrrrrr [:@] The next time some ignorant dumbazz says that to you.... Please punch them in the face repeatedly... With that said... You need to consider these factors: price, fit (which riding position feels better), type of riding (dyna is slightly better for two-up... not much)..... And.... Most importantly... Which bike do you like best? The negative opinion of others is kind of like a dead squirrel.... It stinks and it really doesn't matter

Your first Harley will be awesome no matter what! Remember you are posting in the Sportster section so we have our favorite . If this is your first bike or first street bike I would suggest the National Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic Rider Course (or another that your dealer can point you to). Get the bike you like and think you will be comfortable with. Then go have fun! Just this weekend I had to Road King owners checking out my roadster for quite some time. They both thought it was great.

You'll read this all over the forum - test ride/rent them both and then make up Your own mind. I doubt that there's a Harley model made that "girls" don't ride. Check out some of the ladies here and see what they ride. If you can't handle a Bob, you aren't going to have any better luck on a Sportie.

Anyone who says a Sportster is a girls bike is a F***ING MORON....in all reality (and yes, this IS true) Dyna Lowriders are the best bikes for women (generally speaking) as they'rethe right heightand not top-heavy. So whoever told you that is full of $hit. [:@]
And I dunno 'bout anyone else, but my bike looks a hell of alot meaner than alot of big twins I've seen....it's faster, too. Had it dyno-tuned after stage 1 at MMI by my sister...*A GIRL*...she's a certified HD tech
I've ridden a Street Bob with a 103 kit on it (behind my bike in the sig pic)....and yes, they're fast, and yeah, they look good, very nice bike actually...but to say that you'd risk ruining one because you're afraid of being called 'girly' is just stupid. Especially if this is your first bike.
That's my rant and 2 cents.

Dyna's are probally a little easier to ride, and if your looking in that direction now don't get the sportster. You just won't be happy with it after a few months, and by that time you will take a huge hit if you trade it in or sell it. The sportster isn't a girl bike, it just looks like one. I have even had girls look atmineand say this would be a good bike for a girl, not knowing anything about motorcycles or the sportster/girl bike stigma. Let's face it, the bike is little. It is however quick for a harley, it handles well, and will leave a dyna or any other bigger harley in the dust. Bottom line: you never hear a 1200 sportster owner say "I wish I would have got the 883" and you never hear a Dyna owner saying "I wish I would have gotten the sportster." Take the MSF and get the street bob. Or get a small used honda, practice on that, build your confidence, sell it for what you paid and then get the bob. Then thank me for steering you down the right path. I know sporty owners love their bikes and I like mine too, its fun,but as with most you will eventually want the big twin.

My brother told me once that a Sportser was a girls bike. He doesn't think that anymore. Sorry for the bullet wound Kevin! Hope you get well soon!
