Default Dead Battery

Dead battery in my (new to me) '05 Sportster 1200C. Picked up a newbattery tonight. I'm not a wrench, so how difficult can it be? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Barbara,
The battery cover is on your left hand side while sitting on the bike. Mine is right under the seat and painted black (07 Sportster).
There’s a clamp that holds the battery in, undo that and slide the battery out.
Make sure to disconnect the negative battery cable first, which is the cable farthest away from you as you remove the battery. Thenundo the positive cable. The positive cable isthe one that's been staring you straight in the face as you busted your knucklesremoving theclamp (oh yeah, the positive cable is red... just a hint).

Put the new battery in attach the negative cable andTHEN the positive. Try to stuff all that **** back in that tiny compartment and ride on.

The boys will fill in anysteps I may have missed!

I'm afraid the bigger question is, why is your original battery shot already?

If you didn't have a battery tender hooked, changes are.
Why don't you charge the battery first and see how it goes? You never know!

Chances are high, given Utah as its location,if the bike was kept in outside ambient temperatures that the battery sulfated and shorted itself out. Charging would be something to try, but doubtful it will help.

Regardless, whether you can use the existing battery or need to get another, it should either be brought into a heated space for the winter or have a battery tender on it all winter if kept in outside ambient temperatures to prevent it from sulfating.

Good luck.

Whoops! - LOL!

Oh, well, you got (or already know) the point. Idaho is probably even worse in the winter!

Good luck with the Sporty!

Just like to add on thing. It's almost impossable to put the battery back in without loosening the negative bolt. You will need to disconect the cable from the frame, connect and feed it back to where it bolts on. A real pain in the aZZ!
