ok, so I need to get a sense of how many may have this issue. While talking in another thread, the point that was brought up was that maybe something interacted with the black paint on the "5" speed timing cover, then driping and staining the porous grey coating on the nightster... It would seem to make a lot of sense, as if this were to happen on an engine cam cover that was black, you would not notice it, and the steel or chrome would be a lot less likely to stain. So I ask all:
1. do you have this stain?
2. if no, did you change the out the cover?
3. it yes, then we need to pull together to get HD Mo Co to hear us!!!

Have you tried cleaning the stain with brake cleaner (NOT BRAKE FLUID)? Spray on some brake cleaner and scrub it with the wife's toothbrush. I bet stain comes right out, but the wife's teeth may start turning a little black.

Ha ha, funny post...LOL but I have not tried that. I took the bike straight to the dealer, and they tried all kinds of stuff and could not get it clean. They said though that it would harm the grey coating! so I am reluctant to try it...
By looking at the picture, I am thinking you might be picking up dirt from the road, do you see any oil leak in that area? My cover is chrome but I've never seen oil or grease there.

Get a Mr. Clean eraser and some water. Takes all kinds of stuff off and won't hurt the finish.

I think mr. clean would be chewd up by the sandpaper finish?
I've started using a product by Spectro called XL-1 motorcycle wash. It has cleaned up some real nasty stains on my bike with a simple spray on rinse off. give it a few minutes to clean. it's also recommended to do it in the shade with the bike being cool ofcourse. it's 10 or 11 bucks at most bike shops. I'd say it couldn't hurt to try.
It looks like maybe some oil washed out from behind that cover, I had a leak back in there on my "N" might want to look into that possibility as well.
