Default Shifter Problems

I have a 02 Sportster 1200C, yesterday while riding I noticed that when shifting gears the shifter no longer returns to the neutral position between shifts. I have to move it back to the neutral position before making another shift. What could be wrong.

Thanks for you help.

Sounds like a broken shifter return spring.

yup, does sound like a broken spring, mine had the same problem, twice. might want to check the primary adjustment just for kicks though.

Thanks for you replies, I was thinking the same thing. I looked a little further - removed the linkage and found the sticking was coming from the pedal itself. The bushing in the pedal was completly gummed up, cleaned it up and now back to normal. For future referance is it difficult to replace the spring ?

Thanks again

Glad you got it fixed. FYI - you can download the Clymer service manual here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/f39ivc The download link is at the bottom of the page.
