Default shifter not returning

Annoying problem exists... Only when bike is running, the return spring action on the shifter does not do its job. I shift from neutral to 1st and the shifter arm does not return to its original position. The same happens from 2nd to 3rd,and so on. However this happens about
40% of the time. I just have to slightly nudge the shifter arm to its original position to set it up to shift to the next gear. Coincidentally I just finished adjusting the clutch (twice) by the shop manual. Clutching works fine. Its that annoying shift problem that needs attention.
Any ideas? Thanks

You don't say what year it is.
Make sure all moving parts in the linkage from to toe pad to the shift arm are clean and oiled. I have seen this in here before and it was just a matter of taking everything apart and cleaning it up.
If that doesn't fix the issue, the return spring in the trans may be broken.

I have not done it, but I believe it will require removal of the trans. Hopefully someone who has done this will chip in. Time to invest in a factory repair manual.

KK,, its not just the grim that make the linkage stick. Its also some rust.

WD 40 is not the best to use to lube it, any good oil will do it, I have a small oil can I filled with the Syn oil that I use in the car. Then at every oil change I give the lingage a shot.

If U don't ride much, then oil the linkage every fall and spring to keep the linkage free moving.

I've even seen some members in here put a Grease Zerk in the frame where the linkage shaft goes through.

Had the same issue, clean and grease and you are good to go. It happened to me on the way back from Sturgis. It wasn't a fun ride home. (haha)
