I bought a used Sporty that came with only one key and FOB for the security system. If I get another FOB through an internet parts house, will I be able to get it to work with my scooter or will I have to have the dealer program it?
You'll have to get the fobs re-programmed by a dealer. If I was in your situation, I would be tempted to get the fob that came with the bike reprogrammed anyway. There would have been two programmed originally and that means there'ssomebody out there who hasthe other one and could take your bike without setting off the alarm, should they choose to.
Interestingly, they'll only do two fobs for any one bike. I had a spare fob in my possession, from my previous totalled bike, when I got my current one. I askedif they could programme that as well as the two that came with the new bike, so I would have an extra spare, but they said they can only do a maximum of two keys for a single bike.
Just a thought...try separating the fob from the key and leaving the fob 30 feet from the bike, then use the key to try to start the bike.
If it starts the other fob is hidden on the bike someplace by the previous owner so he didn't have to carry it around, read about a similar situation here a while ago.
The owner's manual that comes with a new bike explains step-by-step how to program/reprogram key FOBs. It's a little bit of a pain 'cause my dealer only programmed one of the key FOBs and I had to program the other. Don't waste your money having a dealer do it, it is definitely a DIY little project.
Thanks Thumper26 and others for taking ths time to respond.
I saw that procedure in the manual for changing the PIN and I see that this reprograms the PIN for the FOB at the same time. I notice it states to go through the process " With an assigned fob present" It is the 'assigned FOB' part I was concerned about. I am wondering if only the dealer can assign the FOB to the specific bike ?
