Thought I had my dream of owning a Harley in the bag today but I'm not sure if I'm getting ripped off or not. I'm looking at a 2004 Sportster 883, pacific blue with 12,800 miles. According to kelly blue book the trade in is $3500 and the retail is $5000. They are asking $4995 and I talked them down to $4600 which makes it around $4800 out the door. This just sounds a little high priced to me but then again I know nothing about how the price of Harley Davidsons go so any advice would be appreciated.. This is from the local dealer by the way..
That does not sound that high, are there any extras? Chrome, Pipes, how are the tires? I paid $ 5200 for a 883 custom this spring, a 2004. It had 2000 miles on it when a bought it, it has about 8000 on it now.
No extras just bare bones bike. Looks nice and all but I see MUCH better deals on the internet and even from sellers with excellent feedback so it's a tossup. I'd love to have a bike that's a little bigger as well. I'm not a big guy at 5'11 194 lbs but it still feels just a little small.
From what I have seen that is a pretty good price. I have been watching the prices for 883 and 1200 for almost 2 months now as i will be buying at the end of November, and for a 883 the average price I have seen from private sellers is around $5500 to $600 for anything 2004 and up. From dealers forget about add on another grand or 2. depending on the milage.
I have been watching craigslist/ebay/hdtrader/these boards/cycletrader/ and one other one that I can't remember the name since it is plugged into my favorites at home and I am at work right now LOL
But again I am very very new to this so I could be thinking something is a good price and find out that I could have paid alot less somewhere else. But I also think the prices are coming down in the next month or so as we move out of the "riding season" but that is just my opnion.
The key is whether the bike is stock or has 2K worth of extras on it. If it has the extras and they are something you would want on the bike then it may be a good deal. If the extras are not your taste then they are worthless. Generally, extras on a bike have little value unless they happen to be just what you want. If the bike is stock, I don't think it's any special deal. Shop private sales not the stealer and you will find a better deal IMO.

I would suggest you pass on by and look at a dyna or soft tail . if you think the bike feels small now in 6 months you will be looking to trade for a bigger bike. its all about you buddy and no body else im 6ft 1 and weigh 230lbs and my 1200r feels just fine. dont settle on what everybody thinks you need buy what you want since your the one spending the cash.
I just bought a 2005 883 Custom for my wife
Two/Tone Blue and Silver, Touring Seat, backrest and leather saddlebags, only 6200 miles and paid $5200 for it
Alittle more than I wanted to spend on a Sporty, I wanted her to get a 1200c but she really liked this one it it fits her perfectly.
I think that deal you are talking about is overpriced, allot of Sportys on the Market these days and allot better deals out there
Please let me know where you are finding these deals? I very rarely see anything under 6k. I will be buying at the end of Nov and I to want a good deal
I just began searching, Ebay, Cycletrader.com and HDtrader.com
Start complnig pricing for the bike you want and when you make offers you will know or have a little more educated guess on what the real value is worth.
Season is almost over for most folks except for us here in the western US, so there should be some really good deals
I only paid 5500 for mine at a dealership, and it has a lot of extras including the Screaming Eagle carb/intake/pipe setup. Fall is always a good time to look for bargains.
