I would like to paint the silver 883 jugs black and would like to assume that any good quality black engine paint will work... Am I wrong?
Was thinking of doing a conversion from 883 to 1200using a kit that would include new jugs but they seem to be costly... Guess you can get them in black or silver. Besides that it's probably a job for a bike mechanic and I would probably mess itup.
Was just going to pressure clean the enginem mask it off and hope for the best.
So can anyone recommend a good brand of paint? Thanks.
You don't say what year the bike is so I'm not sure if your engine is bare matal or powder coated silver. If it's bare aluminum you will have a very hard time prepping the metal good enough for a long lasting paint job since the parts are still installed. If it's powder coated, be sure to clean it THOROUGHLY with mild soap and warm water, followed by adegreaser and a thorough rinse with water. It would be best to scuff the surface prior to applying primer but again, I doubt you'll be able to do that right with the parts installed. A good quality primer and high temp paint to finish it off, following the paint instructions for ambient air temps and humidity.
If you want a very durable, long lasting finish that looks like it came from the factory that way I'd spring for them to be powder coated. It may cost more up front but it's a lot cheaper [and nicer] in the long run.
For bare metal ,Discount Auto sells a product called Metal Etch.(not sure who else sells it)It's in a spray paint can with a green top.Excellent stuff.Spray that firstand then some wrinkle black and it will last a long time.Did mine almost two tears ago
I painted the jugs and heads on my bike a couple of years ago.Do not use engine paint use a good quality wood stove paint it looks better and it stands up better. I even painted part of a chrome exhaust system and it stayed on.
