I'm looking to buy some saddle bags so I can take some short trips on the bike this coming summer. I really want to find the right balance between looks and funtionality. I was looking at this model but its really expensive ($934 for everything I would need).
Well, If I had the cash...I'd be happy with any of those that you posted....especially the first set.
Soon as I do my turnsignal re-location, I'm putting my 40 buck70's vintageWillie & Max bags on my sporty.
These are them on my short lived ACE:
I have some retro look Dyna bags that might work. Heavy duty leather, good condition. For sale in the classifieds.
You also may want to look at www.leatherneckjim.com for some bags. Have his on my Dyna - they're quite a bit larger inside than the retro bags & I'm planning on some serious touring this summer.
Also, with throw overs, you can cut the yokes off and mount them with Easy Brackets. Did that with Jim's. Keep an eye on eBay too, if you're not in a rush.
I liked the Willie & Max synth leather slant-sided bags I had on my Magna. Plain, simple, built tough and I rigid-mounted them. Worked out well. If you like textiles, they they're a little removed from the "traditional Harley look", the Nelson Rigg SB900 touring bags are a hot ticket! Excellent quality, great size and they come with water proof liners. Various mounting options with the included straps and hooks. Great bang-for-the-buck. I've had them on two bikes.
E-Bay is your friend, sometimes. I got a set of slant bagsfor my sportster from there, sinth. leather and they held up real good. didn't leak or nuttin. The ones i got were on the smallish side, only 4" deep, but I only paid $45for 'em and they were still on the bike when I traided it 5 years later. I'd say they held up real well. There wereseveral different sets there too, all different sizes. Give it a look.
I personally wouldnt pay Harleys prices for their luggage. Thee are lots of quality third party items available which are far better value.
If you're not set on leather and its only for occassional trips, the Gran-Throwover Saddlebags on the attached link might suit your purpose. I'm currently debating whether to get these or leather ones myself. One advantage with them is they claim not to require any mounting supports fitted on the bike. http://www.kuryakyn.com/category.asp...=Racks+%5FBags.
Most of the other bags I'm looking at are on UK web sites so wouldnt be of much use to you.
There is plenty of time before next summer, so take youre time and make sure you get what you really want.
I've got the Harley two buckle leather Sportster bags on my 1200 C. Pricey but to me they look the best. They really don't hold as much as they appear to so when I go on overnighters I have a black canvas bag that rides on the passenger seat and is tied down to the strap and the sissy bar. It works great for me.
