a buddy of mine gave me drag bars and a seat for my 07 xl883l. had to scrap the seat because it wasn't even close to fitting. I would like to start the long process of swapping the bars out.. any tips anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated. do i need cables, new grips, or anthing else?
Your cables should be good. Make sure to cover the tank and front fender to protect them from the tools that you WILL drop. ( ask me howI know ) It's actually a simple swap. Should take about 1/2 hour. Be very careful with the wires, be sure not topinch them when you put the controls on. ( again, ask me how I know ) Hint, take the mirrors off, they sometimes get in the way, makes it easier to monuver(sp?) things too. Be careful with the brake line, do not bend it if you can help it, and do not take it loose, unless you like bleeding brakes. Might as well get some new grips to go with the bars. while you're getting the grips, get a shop manual too, worth their weight in gas.
I had an answer for ya on this subject except zimbob seemed to sum it up.....I will add that blue locktight is your friend when reassembly... at least if you do remove the mirrors...
I got the bars installed on the bike and ran into a few problems.. First off, I found the height of the risers was perfect ( didn't need to relocate the turn signals since they didn't hit the tank), but they had me leaning too far forward. I believe they were 5" straight risers.. Found a set of 5.5" curved on ebay for about $60 with shipping.. Also found the bars length was to short (about 27" - 28"... not quite sure how the are measured). I say the length was too short because I couldn't see anything behind me in the mirrors. I think they need to be out more. Couldn't think of any modification for them yet. Looks like free is going to cost more than I thought. If you have drag bars on your bike, what is the length of your bars? Thanks to all who posted for helping me.
Letssee some pics man. I am getting a set of 27" wide for my bike. I am not what you would call skinny at 5'6 and 210 so I may have to figure something with my mirrors also.. hum.. I think I hear money leaving my wallet!!! We will see once I get them put on and take her for a test ride.
