Who agrees!?!?!
"Saying a Sportster is an entry level Harley is like saying you should buy a Corvette to work your way into a Suburban."
I mean really, I had an Electra Glide Standard for 2 years...and it turned out to be more of a hassle to ride sometime because it was so big. Yeah, to ride across the country its a GREAT bike...but I am more of an in-town rider. I sold my Electra Glide for a 1200 Sportster and it fits perfect for my style of riding. Yeah, now some people are gonna say "You just bought a Sportster cause you wanted to say you own a Harley." Which is definatly NOT the case. I hate how people can be so quick to judge. They have NO idea that I put on nearly 10k miles on my 02 Electra Glide last riding season.
Yeah, some people buy the cheapest 883 standard just to "have a Harley." But I think tha majority of younger riders PREFER a smaller, faster, less bulky ride. Its not that they can't afford a Road King or Street Glide....but a Sporty just works better for their style of riding.
Not many 21 year olds go on cross counrty trips. Really.
Let me know your thoughts!
I'll go as far as saying that my Sporty was an entry level Harley for me. At the time I bought mine, I could not afford or at least thought I couldn't afford to buy a Big Twin. I rode the crap out of it for 8 years as my everyday ride. However, I also wished nearly all the time that I had a bigger, more comfortable bike, that was better suited for two-up riding and hauling gear.
For example. My first Harley was and Electra Glide Standard and my Dad's first Harley was a decked out Ultra Classic. I think a lot of people start on Larger bikes.
I bought a Sportster when I was still in my 20's and single. It was a great bike for solo riding and round town action. It's the best for Poker runs.
I gotta be honest. The Sportster is a rough bike and IMO not a good 2 up rider for any long distance.
I am not planning on selling the Sporty but I am working on getting a Bagger for when the ol'lady is coming along. Just gotta pay her car off first.
I didn't buy the sporty just to say I had a Harley. I bought it cause it was the best suited for my style of riding at the time.
I can see having a Sportster AND a bagger in the stable as that's the best of both worlds that HD has to offer. That is my plan and my $0.02.
Yeah man, I agree. I had a bagger and would have kept it if I could. But I would never buy a bike just for the name. I was SO close to buying a Honda ACE, but got such a good deal on my 1200 Sporty that I would have been dumb to pass it up.
I am not trying to justify why I bought a Sportster. I just think a lot of people get offended when other riders judge them like that. My story is a great example. I sold my bagger for a 1200 because th bagger was just plain too big for me. I had it for 2 years...so obviously it wasn't a finnancial problem.
I just think its true that a lot of younger riders buy the bikes because they are nice...not to say they own a Harley.
I'm not trying to **** anyone off...just telling my story and agreeing with Schumachers quote.
