Yep, I gots a suggestion....invest in a grinder, a nice hammer drill, some nice bits, and a whole bunch of rattle cannage and don't worry bout performance til you got the cash.

Seriously, though...you can find pipes, baffles, cones, jet kits, air cleaner/breather kits, pistons, valves, etc. for reasonable prices...you just gotta look in the right places, be patient, and make sure you have a plan.

My bike started out as a BONE STOCK '981200C....and since I laid it down, I have only put about 2K into it to get it where it is now. Over half of which was getting parts to make it road-ready again. If I'd just put that into it without having to replace so much, it would be MUCH faster, and MUCH better looking.

Be creative and use your resources and you can build a kick-*** bike for next to nothing. If you want prime examples of what I mean, go to www.quadcambastards.com and check out the member gallery. ALL of those bikes were built in their owners' garages.

Well my dad is very handy, and we have all the tools needed for a complete teardown / rebuild.

Cycle Shack slip-ons. You can get them for ~$100 and they will perform better over stock.

Best thing to do is decide what style you're going for, first of all. Next decide what all you'll need to achieve that mental picture...

The way I do it is going on google and searching for what style I'm interested in (ie. BOBBER, CHOPPER, CAFE RACER, RAT BIKE, BORING STOCKER, MIRROR MACHINE[8D], Etc.). Find out if it suits you, then start taking note of what PARTSyou'll need and then find a reliable community to gain knowledge from.

With the motor....it's best to start with air/exhaust, then move into drive train (ie. bigger/smaller pulleys, gear sets, frame & suspension, etc.), then move into the actualheads, cams, pistons, etc. This will ensure everything else can HANDLE what you dump into the actual power plant.

Basically, take your time and enjoy working on your bike. You ain't gotta have money to build a kick *** ride, just patience, vision, toolsand common sense. lol

Whatever direction you decide to go, good luck and keep us posted.

go ebay for take offs ans used stuff. Really HP is fleeting at any price, just learning to keep it tuned and running and maintained yourself will save you tons of cash.

craigslist is good too, and junkyards...get a set of heads off a wreck, cylinders, etc. for cheap, then just pay for machining to have em ported, bored, etc. cuts out a GREAT deal of the cost.

i would much rather keep outta the enternals. i figured a different carb / intake / pipes would really make a difference. I also thought about a more agressive cam as well.

Well, cams is internals...cuz in some cases you have to get adjustable pushrods, oversize valves, etc. BUT...I believe you can get Screamin Eagle cams that just bolt right in with higher lift and duration for around 300$. And if you REALLY wanna get the most out of a carb, upgrade to a mikuni. They kick the ever-lovin $hit outta the Keihins.
