For my '99, I bought a National Cycle windshield. It's the deflector model that's clear. Mounts to the handlebars with plastic bolt on mounts. The windshield can be removed in under a minute, but the clamps stay on the bars.
I then bought the HD brand quick detachable windshield, which was around $400.00 give or take, (I forget.)
I just leave the clamps on the bars from the N/C windshield. On longer trips I use the HD, shorter- the N/C.
The HD one really strips the acceleration out of your bike with the big one on though.

I use the HD detachable, and have had no wind issues.

I recommend the Harley detachable one as well, I have in on my '06 Sportster. No wind problem here any more than normal.

Gulfgurl:

I'm going to ask a different question...is the wind bothering you? I'm not being sarcastic, when I was a new rider the wind was a big problem for me, mostly the wind hitting me in the face and pushing my head back (I had a HD DOT Half helment to start with, AKA Mushroom Head Helmet). I bought a fullface helmet and it really helped out and made the ride more comfortable and once I became more comfortable on the bike I went to a "skid lid" and wind feels great. I doubt I could ever ride with a windshield now. Just a thought

Good luck on the windshield, but I really just wanted to say welcome to the forum.

This won't mean anything to most forum members, but maybe you will remember this place.

I worked at Martin Mills in the late 70s and early 80s.

Bring that 4 handicap to Alabama and I'll play you for those stripped socks.

Be careful trying to buff these windshields. I would look for one that is in A-1 condition or just replace the plastic if you get a good deal on a scratched one. I tried buffing mine and it didn't turn out so good.
Why bother? as far as I'm concerned the best part of the quick detach, is you can get that ugly thing off your bike quickly. Cleaning up the weenie shield is kinda like polishing a turd. LOL

I have a quick detachable on my sportie. It comes right off, but makes a huge difference in the cold and wind. Saves you from flying crap on the highway too.

New from Harley they are about $300. Buy one off of Ebay.

I like the detachable windshield with the option to take it off when you want. Works great for long rides, and cold weather. Oh yea...You can kill more bugs.
