Progressive rate springs (brand name aside) work fine with the emulator valves if you use ones that are wound to a high(er) spring rate - certainly higher than stock. The Harley springs (at least the ones in my sportster) are progressively-wound springs but are too soft. They would absolutely be a detriment with the emulator valves.

One thing to remember about the cartridge emulators is that you have to disassemble the forks to make an adjustment to them I don't know about the rest of you but I only want to do that once.So unless your Duck hunting in the canyons probably not worth it.
I am pretty sure there is a way to make them adjustable externally.

The emulators themselfs are adjusted at the time of installation you can add some kind of preload adjuster fork caps that can be adjusted externally but not the emulators. If you're a racer trying to shave a few tenths of a second off your lap time probably worthwhile but I've never felt the need to adjust mine.
