No stock igns are the crap... Best mod you can do to a bike imo is a hi perf ign and a single fire hi perf coil along with better than stock wires. You dont have to change the coil but you will see a diff in a single fire.
My point was:
400 pipes
150 ac
40 buxs jet kit
125 ign
75 coil
couple benjies on labor, knocking on 1k...
theres ways to save no doubt, DIY, eBay, only do the stage .5 = no ign mods...
But one of the best mods I did on my bike was the IGN and the second was the 2-1 pipe as far as perf mods. A good stage .5 nets you around 10 HP, throw a set of drag pipes on and you lose around 10 HP. that always amazes me...
$1000 is about right from the dealer. I just checked for my 08 1200 custom and that is right in the ball park.
$140- se air cleaner
$400- sert (race tuner)
$260- vance and hines slip ons
+ install
+ dyno time (they dyno after the break in period)
I know you can do it yourself for less money but it is kindof a tossup. Fuel controlers like Vance and Hines Fuel Pak are generic maps. I think it would be a little better to have them adjusted for each individual bike. Just look around on this forum and others it seems like many people have problems with these setups (when doing it themselves). If a dealer does it you have someone to go back on if there is a problem. It is a gray area for warranty purposes but my dealer says they haven't had any issues with getting things warrantied. Call me a puss but to me it' piece of mind, not to mention no tools being thrown or swearing involved. All that being said it's still hard to drop a G for pipes.
