Default Tires

I just read an interesting post in a thread that talked about age of tires in time versus miles. My bike has very low mileage for an 02. I just never rode it because I didn't like it and spent most of my time on my ATV or golfing or just about anything else. Well, last year I was going to sell it. After putting it up for sale, I realized that it really wasn't worth much being a rigid, being a Sportster, motorcycles weren't selling. I could go on and on. So what does any man do with a toy that doesn't do it for him, he dumps money into it. So I hooked up with a HD racing team and one of their guys was cool enough to spec out my build. The first phase worked out great and the bike finally performs. I got it running in time to go to bike week in OC and had a blast. I'm having some additional head work done and then I should be all done (no really). So my bike is about 5 1/2 years old but the tires have maybe 2500 miles on it. Do I keep riding or do I get new tires. I'm more about safety than saving a few $$. Thanks

I think you already have your answer.... if you are still unsure, have the tires inspected by a professional (not a tire salesman) and go from there.

I just replaced my front tire because it was getting dry rotted. It had plenty of miles left and was not even 2 years old. Since you are going for safety, and dumping money into it anyways, might as well replace them since they are so old.

Did you (or anyone who reads this) simply stay with the same Dunlops?

I went with Michelin my last replacement. Proven on the track - I like them so far.

Replace those tires!!! I'm on my second set of Metzler's I love them!! I don't hafta worry about dry rot. But the Metzlers how up for as many miles as the Dunlops, and perform much better.

I replace tires when they don't have any tread left but really it depends on how you intend on using the bike; daily driver/commuter, street racer, canyon carver, bar hopper etc.If your just liesurely riding it to work and back replace your tires when they're worn out.If your chasing Ducattis through the canyons buy some top shelf rubber.

Replace em...if you're putting all that work into the motor, you might as well put it all on some nice, new rubber.

Just a thought.
