Default RE: Replacement tire

I bought my bike used (in October '06) with about 1200 miles on the original tires. Dunlops. I also have the Custom with the 21" front wheel. I don't think I'm overly aggressive, but by August I replaced both tires when I had my inspection done.I purchased a new rear tire and a used front tire (from cajun883custom) with a decent amount of rubber still on it. Well our season ended this year around Thanksgiving and I haven't put on more than maybe 500 miles since then. I'm not down to the wear bars yet, but I think I'll have to replace the front tire again before the summer season hits. BTW I have about 12300 miles now. Imay consider trying another brand to see if I canget more life from thetire. Any suggestions? If my memory is correct, a new Dunlop has only about 5/32 of tread to start with. Can anyone recommend a brand with deeper tread than this???

I hit 7000 last week and got a new rear, but the front looks all but new yet. I'm not easy on mine at all. I replaced my rear with a dunlop with out the harley logo. I felt 7000 was good for the rear with how I ride.

I guess I can't complain then. My 21" stock Dunlop has just under 13k and though well worn, has no wear bars - I think I will get another 2k out of it. I'l prob out a ME880 onthen since that is what I out on the rear.

Beneath the usable tread on your tires are voids (they look like little sliced gouges). When they become visible it is an indication to you that you have worn through the safe level of tread wear on the tire and you should consider replacing them. The belt showing through will not be far behind.

I don't know why you guys are getting such low miles out of your stock tires.I just got 25,000 miles on my stock 21 inch.
Heat has alot to due with tread life. I've noticed many of the riders reporting the low tread life on the 21" tires tend to live in the hotter parts of the southern US. The fact that you live in the artic, supports that theory.

The Dunlops tires made in the usa are great tires, I have always gotten respectable milage and great proformance out of them.
My fat boy gets about 10,000 on a rear more on the front
RG gets about 12-14000 on a rear and more on the front Bagger is heavyer but I do not ride it as hard.
You can do all kind of jacking around with tire brands and never find a better street tire than Dunlops.
harder rubber tires will last longer but traction goes way down it is a blance between handeling and how many miles you get Dunlops has it right.
I have to ask what is this idea that everything HD use is some how not good and firstthing we must do is chnage it to an after market brand?
I have been ridng a long time and HD products all meet or pass any standard out there.
There some times better products avabile at a price.
Those that I know that ride their bikes and except for making it look a bit different leave it the heck alone seem to never have any problems.
Dunlops made by good hard working Americans great product. maybe if you keep a Dunlops worker on the job he may buy the products your company makes and you'll stay on the job. Option B move to China for work

Well gee, I guess if you always settle for "Just OK" and never try anything different, I will agree and say that the Dunlops are decent tires. I suppose I could say the same thing about the Uniroyal tires that came on my cage, but what a difference when I replaced them with a good set of Michlens. There's alot of riders here finding the same kind of improvement by switching to the ME880's on their bikes. Better mileage, better handling, better stopping grip on wet pavement, all seems to equal a safer ride to me.

Last time I checked, the Fat Boy and RG didn't run a skinny MH90 21" front tire either. The point of the OP was low mileage from the 21" bicycle tire.

Depending on your point of view, Metzler got a great shot in the arm last year when the Dunlop workers went on strike and sent Harley riders elsewhere in search of tires. As a result, many riders have discovered a Better Tire.

While I am not a fan of the stock 21" Dunlop. I got over 17k on the tire. Both front and rear. I swapped the rear for the Avon (love it) and now want to swap for a wider front. It seems like that might be a problem as I dont want to change rims. I will go with the Avon 21".

I got 8K on the factory Dunlop. It had tred left, but I was replacing the worn out rear so I did both at the same time. So far 3.5K on the 90/90 Avon and it's got a ton of life left in it. Handles better than the stocker and is about 1/2 inch wider too.
