Default Replacement tire

I have a 06 1200, and as we all know it has the 21 inch tire, and as we know we dont get many miles out of it, 5500 miles out of present set. It presently has MH90-21 MC 54H stamped on the side wall. Im not sure what all that means. But I need your help in looking for a tire that is wider so I have more surface on the road, I think this will let me get more miles out of a tire. I dont know how wide I can go with the stock front fender with out modifications. Just talked to the dealer and he said I was stuck with stock, sure seems like ive seen others put wider ones on

The problem with getting a wider tire on the 21" wheel is the narrow width of the rim, @ 2.15". Your best bet is to go with a standard 19" x 2.5" wheel and then go for the fatter 100/90-19 tire. That's what I did, when I got tired of changing front tires every 4-5 months.

Several folks on this forum have been singing the praises of the Metzler ME880's and Avon Venoms as replacement tires for the stock Dunlops. Seems to me you ought to be getting a whole lot more than 5,500 miles out of a set of Dunlops! Of course, it all depends on how and where you ride...

Yeah if I'd had the extra money at the timeI would've got19" rim myself and ran a bigger tire but just opted for an Avon Venom-x 90/90 21 instead this time. Great tire so far (already got over 2k miles on it), grips really well and rides very smooth, its also a bit wider and taller byperhaps 1/4-3/8" over stock even though its the same sz.. I'm sure from the looks of it so far that I'll get good mileage out of it but then again I got 14,000 out of my stock dunlop. Definately going to switch the back for Avon when needed but I should end up with about 20k on it as I'm at over 17k now and have about 1/8" or more tread left.

Matt, I'm curious, do you only ride your bike on beach sand? That kind of tire mileage is incredable.

The last two comments generate a new question. How many miles did everybody get out of their original 21 in front dunlap tire. I have presently 5500, will at most get another 1000 miles. Is this about average. Charley, you post a interesting reply, however, not sure if changing to a 19 inch tire justifies the cost of a new wheel to get more milage fron a 19 in tire.

Though we have some twisties on the backroads round these parts in MDits pretty flat/straight so mostly hwy. miles. When I changed my front the ctr. groove was gone but I'm nottoo hard on my tires usually, though I do have wear marks all the way over on the chicken strip
Not bad huh... considering I run up about 1k/month when I can. Keeping proper inflation helps and no burnouts, still have orig. brake pads too with plenty left and enough to lock up the back or dang near do stoppies on the front

With 21" tires I got about 6-7K per tire. Based on others that ride like I do and have 19" tires, I expect to get 15K miles on the 19". An added benefit to switching to the 19" is much better handling in the corners and on the twisties, due to having more rubber on the road.

Also, if you are considering switching to 19" wheels, there are usually used 19" wheels on EBay fairly cheap. You will need different axle spacers though for the 19".
