While I'm new to the whole Motorcycle thing (just got my Sporty a few weeks ago) I spent 6 years as a competitive bicycle rider/racer. SoI would do about 300-400 miles a week on the road. Obviously at a slower speed but it always amazed me how often drivers would just look right past you and never register that you were there. For the most part I would just assume that they were going to do whatever would be most dangerous for me. I found by assuming the worst case I was ready to react when they did exactly what I expected. I believe that I will have to take the same point of view on my Sporty.

We had one almost cut over in front of us today after she, notice I said "she" passed by us and was impatient because the car in front wasn't going warp speed. What is with women drivers? I just pointed at her when I went by her, no flipping off, My wife probably did flip her off, I know she laid on her horn.

That's exactly the problem - people in a hurry. Not sure, but maybe they think bikes just get in the way and they can get were they are going faster if they are in front of bikes. And I know, I know, many bikers say to leave them in the dust and ride it like you stole it, but on 2 lane roads I like to keep a space cushion between me and the vehicle in front of me. Some of the time, if someone gets too close I just turn around and glare - and they get the point and back off. Sometimes, not.

But not all is bad news, there are also folks who go out of their way to be courteous and offer lots of space cushion, give the right of way, etc (I always think that many of these folks are bikers or want to ride).

ORIGINAL: Teek

I'm invisible! I'm not there! They can't see me. I can't get mad at someone who doesn't even know I'm there. They can't possibly know I'm on the road because I'm invisible! Of COURSE cagers are gonna move over into my lane. Of COURSE they are gonna pull out in front of me. Of Course they are gonna pull right up on my fender at stoplights. I just have to watch what they are doing and what's going on all around me at all times, and hope timing's on my side. Riding in the insanity of the Philippines has made me tolerate the stupidity of American cagers a little more. Gawd, riding in that place was a trip! No stop signs at intersections, oncoming traffic lane being impromtu turned into a left turn lane, lane sharing, passing in the oncoming lane with ONCOMING TRAFFIC....definitely a different mindset over there.

I've had two close calls in two days. One I attribute to inattention and/or stupidity, and the other one I attibute to poor intersection design in a parking garage. I don't get mad often, but sometimes I shake my head in bewilderment of some of the things I see on the public streets, roads and highways.

Yep Teek's got it right remember you want to live to fight another day!

While riding, I've had cause to respond to some inept, discourteous and down right dangerous drivers. Twice to people whom actually took me down. To be honest, I believe the only times I have raised anyone's consciousness is when I've stopped and respectfully spoken to them regarding the incident or behavior. Avoiding confrontation is conducive to their truly hearing what you are saying. Additionally, when the talk is over, I feel a bit better having ridden the higher road. [sm=deal.gif]
