If there is one thing Harley ever did right it was the way they designed the primary adjustment on Sportsters. I wouldn't even install it.

I bet it will take longer to install it than the amount of time you would spend manually adjusting yours for the rest of your life. It's what, about four minutes per adjustment?

+1 I might consider it, but not unless I had another reason to justify pulling the primary cover off.

To the "naysayers"...don't knock it if you haven't tried it...

Upside..smoother shifts (except you'll still get the neutral to first "clack")..no more missed shifts from first to second...less noise.

downside..pain in the *** to line the primary gasket up while installing. (use an "AFB" style gasket...it's an aluminum gasket coated on both sides with a dense foam..won't leak and easier to work with than paper)

I did a google search on the tensioner and the consensus is that the Hayden is great, not just to avoid the adjustment, but the shifting is better. Those guys were talkingbig twins though. My pet on the Harley is the shifting. So, I can think this would be nice. I assume the are making them for the EVO now??? But, what needs to come off? The whole cover? Where can I buy this and does anyone have some basic description of the instal??

It's easy to install...same as replacing your old adjuster...you just pop the primary cover, hold the threaded side with an allen, remove the lock nut, and then thread it out of the primary cover. the auto adjuster installs the same, it just doesn't have an adjustment to be made once it's re installed.

you may have just answered a question thats been bothering me for a while.

I had my tranny rebuilt from ground up, but im always getting this nasty clank from nuetral to 1st gear. everything else shifts smooth. 1988 4 speed. its always made the noise, but i knew the chain tension was off when it shifted hard in every other gear.

at least if your telling me neutral to 1st is naturally clanky, that eases my worries about messing up the bike everytime i ride.
