I wouldnt go any smaller than a 1200. My mom owns an 883 and the difference between my 1200 and her bike is like night and day.

Default 883

I've owned and enjoyed riding the 883, 1200 sportsters and I weigh a similar amount and Yes they are both up to the task and still produce enough smiles per mile. It's really for you to decide is the relatively slower accerleration, etc suits what you want.
883 will do what is needed and covers town work easily, out of town it takes a little longer than the bigger engines but kick back and enjoy the ride.

I have a 2007 1200C with 17,000 miles on it and a friend I ride with has a 2009 883C, when riding his bike the only way you could tell any difference between the two would be with a stop watch. Since we don't race there is no notable difference. His does have a slightly softer exhaust note. I'm 5' 9" and 205 lbs. 30" inseam, the Customs are a perfect fit.

If you have doubt that the 883 wont meet your expectations then dont mess around, just get the 1200 to begin with and it will have better resale value. 1200's have decent performance but are not the fastest, THe differnece between the 883 and the 1200 should be noticable, your talking 50 Ft# vs 70 ft# of torque. Ofcourse if you want awesome performance get a VRod or a yamaha.

you cant ask the question "is it big enough?" and get a good answer even a 250cc is big enough to move you. to decide if the frame is big enough or not you just have to sit on a bike to decide, if it's not comfortable then the anwer is no.
