Help please - Nightster handlebar problem/question- UPDATE
AlthoughI love the look of the stock bars, after a long trip from Mass to Myrtle Beach and back, I have definitely decided I need to change handlebars. I wish it weren't so, but it is.
I do NOT want the mini-apes if I can help it, mostly because: 1) everyone seems to be getting them on their Nighster and 2) my hubby put them on his Night TRAIN, and I do not want to look like his mini-twin (his unspoken concern, not mine).
I need to get the bars closer to me. A lot closer. I am only 5' 3-1/2". I put a 3-1/2" riser on already, with the stock bars, and that made the height O.K. I need probably 10" of pullback to be comfortable. I am hoping not to have to spend $200 for a set of new bars!!!!
Question: Anyone know if a pullback riser can be used on the Nighster? Hubby seems to think there will be a problem clearing the tank (the speed, I think he means - not quite sure). Also, if I had to go to thicker bars (1-1/4" versus 1"), to get the bars that will work, anyone know if that will work on the Nightster ? (I assume I'd have to get different risers and maybe a different cap as well?).
RE: Help please - Nightster handlebar problem/question
Perch I can't help with your question about the bars but I'd be interested in hearing what others may have to say. How was the ride down to Myrtle on the Nightster? You might be the first to go the "distance" on the N. If you have a minute, let us know how you and the bike did. Thanks, Dan

I'd say mini apes are your best bet but I understand the reason for not wanting them. A lot of people say buck horns are comfy but I'm not a fan. I think the options are limited for ya. You could always go with big old apes and out do your hubbys mini apes I don't have the minis but I think they are VERY comfortable and large apes might not be as good. good luck finding a good setup.
RE: Help please - Nightster handlebar problem/question
Well - I have new bars. To complete the story - I DID have buckhorns on for a while and liked them but they weren't QUITE right, and I wasn't sure after a while if I liked the look of them. THey were free from a friend. Well - this friend had another set of bars (free also - I like free) and they are chrome mini-apes. Put my regular riser back on with these bars and I think this is going to do the trick. One thing about the buckhorns was that there were only 26" wide. The stock bar is between 31" and 32". These mini-apes are the same width. I think that was ONE of the things that wasn't quite right on the buckhorns. THat and they weren't QUITE high enough. Anyway - I decided since hubby has the black mini-apes, and that is also what lots of people are putting on their Nighster - that these chrome ones are a little different. So I am going to ride with them a while and see - but so far I did a 100 miler around the beautiful Quabbin Resevoir here in western MA and loved them.
As for the trip to Myrtle Beach - it was great except for my aching arms - I will write more in a separate post.

Perch, did you have to re-do your cables with those bars?
When I had the buckhorns put on that I had for a while, it required that the brake cable be replaced. So that was already done. The guys (hubby and friend) thought they might have to replace theclutch cable, but they managed not to have to. It's fine, and they don't think there will be any problem, but there isn't a LOT of slack left. Now if I wanted to use the 3-1/2" riser that I had bought and was using with the stock bars, they would have had to replace the clutch cable. I went back to the stock riser and think that will be O.K. with the mini-apes I have.

I changed to the pull back bars made by harley for the sportster and it was like night and day differance. I have a 2005 custom which hsa a riser already on it.
