Default New 2008 1200 Nightster - Couple Questions

Just wanted to say "whut up" to everyone. I am new to the Harley Family...just purchased a 2008 Nightster. I'm not used to the rumbling and vibrations a Harley puts out so I had a couple of questions. Any help would be really appreciated guys!

1. When I shift from any gear, there's a loud "clunk." I've heard this is normal with HD's but just wanna make sure. Is this normal?

2. Sometimes, when I'm in a higher gear, lets say in 3rd going about 40 and I throttle it, I get a vibration or "lugging" feeling. Kinda weirding me out. I would think my RPMs are high enough, no?

3. If I were to get some V&H shortshots, how loud are they compared to stock? Is it better to have the quiet baffles on?

4. And do I need an A/C right away with a re-map if I install the V&H's or can i ride for a while before doing all that. From what I have been reading, people are paying alot for all of this. I live in LA, and somehow everything seems to be so much more expensive in this godd*#mn city.

Again, any help/feedback for this newbie would be greatly appreciated guys! Thanks!

Default RE: New 2008 1200 Nightster - Couple Questions

Welcome to the family,

I too own an 08 nightster and really enjoy it,

To answer the questions tot he best of my ability.

1. I thought the clunk might be a potential problem but I've talked to lots of owners and It's a harley.

2. My sporty doesn't like 40 MPH it Likes 60-70 MPH. If im in lower gears at lower speeds it sounds like it's lugging.

3. I have V/H longshots and it'sloud, butloud tome might be way too loud for you. I'ver had my exhaust on for about a month and Ive done no remap and it's running great. Speaking to some friends that own performance shots if you only change the exhaust no remap is necessary. If you change the A/C then the remap is probably necessary.

I've got the same bike, and mine acts the same way so I guess it's normal. Why would you want "quiet" baffles? I want to wake the dead.

08 Nightster here and also answering to the best of my limited ability..

1. Shift clunk is normal and loved!

2. I had this too in a few spots. Like you described, I REALLY had to work to keep the bike in the correct powerband or it lugged. Especially noticeable just under 30 and just under 40. This was COMPLETELY resolved when I installed the PCIII and had the bike dyno tuned. I understand this behavior" is due to Harley's being tuned lean by the factory to meet emissions. They run "all right" from the factory but will run "A WHOLE LOT BETTER" if tuned correctly.

3. V&H are loud.

4. LA expensive? You should try New York![&:]

Both of my Harleys make the clicking/clunking noise while shifting. I hope its not a problem!

Did you mean LA as in Louisiana or in Los Angeles. I live close to Los Angeles and looking for others to ride with. E-mail me at STRIVE4EXCLNC@YAHOO.COM.

Yeah, I like the "clunk". If your bike is really new it's best to keep it under 50 MPH for the first couple hundred miles. The lugging will also be taken care of after you put some more miles on the bike. I noticed mine improved after 1,000 and then even more after putting short shots, a/c and PCIII on.

Thanks for the quick responses guys! Appreciate that!

Now I can rest much better knowing nothing is wrong with it. I'll post some pics when I geta chance, but I wanna put some mods on first before I show it off

I'm debating whether to put forward controls on first, or pipes...hmmm...the worries I have.
