Default When should I do my first service?

Just bought a brand new 2008 Nightster and I am wondering when I should do my first service. My book says 1K for first service, but the service department I bought my bike at said 500 miles. I was thinking about doing all of the services myself since I live 60 miles away from any HD service department. I am thinking about using Royal Purple 20W-50W synthetic oil on my first change.

Switching to synthetic is usually a good idea. However your manual is correct, your first service is 1k and then 5k and so on. Follow the service schedule in the manual so you don't have any warranty issues.

My dealer told me it's best to be as close to 1000 as you can get it for the first service, but if it's 950 or 1100, it shouldn't hurt anything so it does not have to be exactly 1000 miles.

What's included in the 1st (1k) service at the dealership?

Assuming the dealer does what they are supposed to do, everything that listed in the Service Schedule, in the back of your Owners Manual, under the 1K service requirements.

When your motor sounds like a box of rocks, you will switch back to dino.
Since I switched to Rev Tech 25-60, it in quiet as a mouse, yet roars like a lion.

I changed oil only at 500 just to get any suspended particles out then did the normal 1K service at 1K, I got the dealer to throw that in on the deal so they used regular oil.
I changed it again myself at about 2500 to amsoil.
