Default Is 1000 mile service worth it?

I called the stealership yesterday and arranged for my 1000 mile service (afterwards I realized that I put a few more than 1000 on my bike) and was quoted as the service being $320.&nbsp\\; I've recently run into a bunch of other financial things I have to deal with, and I'm feeling the sticker shock.&nbsp\\; I'm thinking it might be better if I just do the service myself and keep the receipts for the motor oil, filter, etc. to prove that I serviced it at 1000 miles.&nbsp\\; What do you think?&nbsp\\; Any input is greatly appreciated.

there's quite a bit that happens at the 1000 mile service other than changing the oil.
&nbsp\\;
the price seems pretty high, is there an indie in your area that specializes in harleys?&nbsp\\; they usually do better work at cheaper prices.
&nbsp\\;
whatever you choose to do, the service is imperitive and has to be done by the book.&nbsp\\; feel free to do the other services by yourself, but for the 1000 mile one, I think a professional should handle that.&nbsp\\; whether that professional is an independant wrench or an authorized dealer is up to you.

While I do my own wrenching and recommend it to others, I feel the 1000 mile service is best done by the dealer. At the 1K, there is a long list of torque checks and adjustments that the dealer is responsible for doing and when he finishes, he is signing off that everything from from the factory is up to snuff. That in my opinion helps prevent possible future warranty disputes.

Silverbullet: never said I couldn't afford the gas, and I usually can afford the service, but this month I had to put money towards grad school because I filled out the wrong form on my financial aid and my dog needs expensive medication due to a rare condition called Perianal Fistulas.&nbsp\\; I don't recommend you look it up, the images are not pretty.

cHarley &amp\\; HeyMoe: Thanks for the input, I really do appreciate it.&nbsp\\; I've looked at the list in my owner's manual and I do see it's extensive.

rob i: excellent point, I found another place in the area with Harley-trained techs that does it for $150.

Thanks all!&nbsp\\; I am constantly thankful for the information and advice I find on this forum.

Here is a though for you, change the&nbsp\\;filter, primary and engine&nbsp\\;oil yourself. then have the dealer do the rest of the service.&nbsp\\; I did that and got away with $86.50 and have the invoice for the 1000 k service to boot.

I think that's an awesome idea.&nbsp\\; And switch to something good and synthetic by the way - Mobil 1, Amsoil, Amsoil/Mobil1 and Redline...

Sure, it is listed in the Service Manual. If you don't have one, then you need one, if you are going to do the work yourself.

Yeah, i would have the dealer or an Indie who specializes in Harley's do the 1K service.&nbsp\\;If not for anything else but warranty issues down the road.
