Is there a way to soften up the rear suspension on my '08 1200C? I've had a few bikes, ranging from off road, to cruisers, to sport tourers and my '08 1200C is the stiffest one I've ridden. It's great on the asphalt super slabs, but when you get on a concrete roadway with joints every 40 or 50 feet it rattles you pretty good. I've messed with the pre-load a little, but that just affects the rebound on the shocks. Any ideas or experience on this?

Sportsters have notoriously bad suspensions.

WW, this was my solution, I replaced the stock 11.75 inch stock shocks with these 13.5" \\;\\\\\\; \\;\\\\\\; \\;\\\\\\; Progressive 440 Standards which give me 3.04 inches of travel and a well controlled but cushy ride. The bike no longer squats on hard acceleration due to the IAS valves, I also installed Progressive fork springs and used the spacers full length with 7W BelRay fork oil. Now when you lean on the seat a little the suspension moves a little. The LAChoppers lowering blocks keep the right bottom shock bolt from touching the top muffler.
