Default Spirited riding not possible on the Sporty?

Hi folks,

I have searched on this and was surprised that I did not find anything on it, so if there are threads out there on it, I apologize.

what's with the low hanging stand on the Sportsters? I'm riding my wife's bike through the twisties after her recent upgrades.

On left curves, it does not take much lean angle at all to scrape the stand, really taking the fun out of it you know, and making it a little dangerous if you enter a left curve of equal radius to a right curve, at the same speed. The right hander will present you with no issue, but the lefty is going to be a problem.

The stand on my FXSTC is way forward, up near the controls. I have not been able to come close to scraping anything on my bike as a result.

she has a Custom with forward controls. is there any way to relocate the stand to prevent this from happening?

that 1200 is such a fun bike to toss around, I'd like to figure a way around this issue.

thanks!

Jeff

hi,

her stock pegs don't have feelers, and it's the jiffy stand that scrapes on the lean, not the pegs.

I'd been fine if it was the pegs as that's how you determine the lean angle of the bike, right? typically, when you scrape the pegs consistently, that all you have.

I wish I was scraping the pegs!!! not getting that far....

I scrape the pegs on my Nightster and I haven't yet (that I know of) scraped the stand. Maybe the 1200C is a bit different than the 1200N.

I have a 1200XL Custom also, I have never scraped the jiffy stand. I have scraped the left peg a couple times. My stand tucks up pretty far under the bike so unless the spring that holds it up is loose for some reason I can't see how it would ever scrape.

it fits up snug to the bottom of the primary drive casing, but the contact arm seems very long to me, and hangs down a great deal.

I know it's the stand that's dragging as I can clearly see where the metal has shaved off, and since the pegs have no feelers, I would certainly see rubber burned off of the outside of the pegs....then there's that really loud metal on pavement sound when it occurs :-)
wow, interesting..

..well, I'm glad to know it's not typical, so I am going to have to investigate further to figure out what's going on...

boy, I just assumed this was a typical thing with Sporty's....guess not...
I forgot to mention mine is an '08, so I should be experiencing the same issue if it was common. Wonder if they put the wrong stand on it. Maybe it was meant for a different bike. The custom is slightly lower than other sportys, maybe they used one for a taller model?

Scraping the kickstand is no more dangerous than scraping pegs. All it can do is scrape.I've got a much older Sporty but I scrape my kickstand all the time.I scrape my pipes once in while on right turns
