I've used a couple of set they are pretty loud but a little to raspy for my taste, I found that for the best sound get a set of S&S mufflers they cost about 3 times as much but they sound about 3 times better.
I have the full system... and love them.. i want to take the baffles out... not loud enough still get the guys who just dont see us.. LOUDER THE BETTER!!! thats why they make ear plugs..
Does that mean I'll go deaf and won't notice them as much any more? haha. I actually love the sound of the cycle shacks and they are great quality - just a little loud but I am sure I would think the same thing with the other brands as well. But definetly the best buy as far as slip-ons go for a sportster.
Nope...I can still hear. You just won't notice them after awhile. Of course I wear a helmet, so that keeps some of the noise down.
Hey Golfgurl,
On my 1200, I went through that annoying popping after I did my slip-ons and rejet. It would snap-crackle-pop everytime on decel. I was running a 46 slow jet and a 190 main and thought that the popping was from a rich main jet. I took it to a local indy shop and the guy said its normally from a lean condition of the slow jet but could also come from a overly excessive rich condition. He also said that the less exhaust restriction you have, the more popping will occur. He said that open drag pipes are the worst.
Anyway, after he put in the 48 slow jet, almost all the popping went away. I still have some popping but its subtle and not annoying at all. It almost seems natural sounding to me. We also backed off the main to a 185 which had no effect on the popping issue, but was not necessary for my set-up. That was about 2500 miles ago and the other day, I decided to pull my plugs and see how things have been burning. I kinda expected to see some carbon build-up on the electrode and insulator but was surprised at how clean and almost new they looked. No residue at all.
I know the 883 uses slightly smaller jets, but you may try bumping your slow jet up to the next size. Good luck.
The cycle shacks will mellow out and lose the raspy sound once they get some carbon built up inside the pipes. They quality on Cycle Shacks is good, not the finest chrome available, but it's good quality, and it holds up over time.
I've had mine for a little over 2 years, and over 36,000 miles. I'm still very happy with them.
