I'm a new harley owner a 1999 883 sportster, I havn'e even picked it up yet.
I've owned a 750 virago and a 500 honda and sold those 10 years ago.
NOW kids are almost thru with college and I'm rewarding myself with a new to me Harley (dream fulfilled)
I will be on my way to pick up the bike tomorrow and the previous owner said it needs a new battery.
I called the Austin Tx HD dealer and he quoted me a price of about 85 bucks. Walmart is about half that.
My question is ( I hope I don't offend any purists here ) is since you don't see the battery should I save a few bucks
and buy it from Walmart or is the HD battery better???
Actually neither is a good buy. There are superb batteries out there for good prices. Check the internet. I just remembered, go to summit racing.com and look up their oddessy battery for harley. Best battery for the price that you can buy.
I picked up one of the batteries at Wal-Mart for my lawn tractor, and it's worked flawlessly for two years now. Sits in the freezing garage during the winter and never needs to be charged (first one I had that didn't need that!). Takes a heck of a beating bouncing over the rough ground I have. As long as the physical size and amp hour ratings are the same, it shouldn't be a problem. Not to deny there may be better deals out there, but having the dealer close by for warranty vs mail-order is something to consider.
Congrats on your new bike. I did the same thing, kids grew up, bought a Harley. Just get a "good" rated battery at Wal-mart. As long as it meets specs you should'nt have a problem. Good Luck,
John
