Default Sputter help

Hi yall, I'm new to the forum! It looks cool! I've got a 2001 XL1200c with 3650 miles on it. I have D&D slip on pipes and stock carb and intake. I recently have been getting a sputter out of first gear. It seems to miss when idling and doesnt seem strong and responsive like before. When its idling and I roll the throttle in neutral it seems slow not responsive. I believe it is starved for air. I took the air filter off completely just to test it and that seemed to remove the sputter. My question is instead of having it rejetted and go to a high flow cleaner, would it be worth my money to attempt a K & N filter first before doing that?? I'm trying to cut down on the cost of rejetting and high flowing it. Is there anything else I can do that would help, but not be harmful to the bike. Any suggestions??

Check your filter, hold it up to a light source. Light should easily be seen though it. If it is dark in color, it could be clogged with dust. Check your spark plugs. What color are they? A dark color, brown or black, would indicate too much fuel or a lack of air. White is a lack of fuel (lean) and mite require re jetting. Start with the simple things, before the expensive.

Wraith, thanks for your reply. The stock air filter is new. I also replaced the plugs and wires. The color of the plugs were dark brown so that would support the starved for air theory. I know the K&N filter would add a litte more air to it but I dont know if it will be enough.

A k and n IS a high flow filter. I would suggest putting one in. You can get them at Autozone for a reasonable price. The4n if you still ahve a sputter you could try adjusting the fuel/air mixture screw.

Dyno tune the bike and it will save you time and hassle. A good tune will set the correct jets and mixture plus get the most bang for the buck!
