Question Been lookin' at the scoot...now a question

As part of my winter mods, I want to either paint, or do a partial wrap/paint on the pipes. I did a search and did not really come up with any good answers so I will divert to the pros. In the search there is conflicting informaiton on 1. what type of flat/satin paint works best and 2. how to prep the chrome for the best paint adhesion. I know some will say either powder coat or ceramic, but I want to do this myself. TIA for any advice!

scratch it up with sandpaper and make sure it doesnt have any grease or dirt and just spray it down with a quality high temp paint.

if you want it to stick really good the secret is to build it up in very very very fine mists. the first few coats should barely be visible. the mist sticks better and you can build on it to get darker and then you go full on with the paint.

the cool thing is if they ever get scratched just shoot it with the paint again, most high temp flat black paint will blend right in to the rest, you wont even see the spot you touched up!

when you run the bike it might smell for a little but its baking on and getting stronger. the smell goes away after a few minutes. and some high temp paints dont even do this

good luck!

oh and here is a pic of my pipe wraps and silver high temp painted pipe ends.

by the way you can also see i painted my shock cover, fork boots, and cylinders with the flat black paint. and i used high temp engine paint for the frame beucase its stronger than regular spraypaint.

edit

i had the entire engine side cases painted silver as well, but i stripped it off (yes you can do this as well, its not totally permanent) so i could get the raw aluminum look back, i still have the silver on the part where the oil filter spins on, you can see how clean it looks compared to the rest. its great stuff

a can of pressurized carb cleaner will force the paint off, but most solvents will not eat the paint away, especially if they just drip onto it or flow accross it, only pressure can take it off. just more info so you can get to painting your bike yourself and knowing more.

I used to paint the pipes on a CB750. Just sanded the rust and warmed the bike up. Then used hi-temp black paint for grilles, I think. I'm not a pro, but it worked great and looked real good.

Thanks for the info guys! I will probably give it a go this weekend as the forecast is calling for snow here in central Indiana. Worst case scenario, I screw it up and have to do it again. I can't imagine high temp paint would cost much.

I've heard some people say to use appliance epoxy paint. They say it last's much longer than reg paint. I don't know if that is in a high temp situation or not though.<shrug>
