Default Installing Apes

Hello, all. First of all I feel a little guilty because I have taken away so much useful info from these forums without ever posting anything. I'm pretty new to bikes so hopefully as I learn more I might be able to contribute. I have an 08 1200c and am looking to put 12" Z bars on it. I called the dealer and over the phone they estimated the job at around a thousand dollars. I can't believe it could cost this much so I am trying to learn how to do this myself. I learn fast but currently don't know all that much about turning wrenches. I'm looking for any resources, hints, tips you all might have. I have searched online and in the forums for hours and have learned a lot, but still don't feel completely comfortable with the job. My main issues are cables. How difficult is removing/extending cables and what would the best way for a new guy to go about it. I'd hate to have to haul my bike to a shop because I took it apart and can't get it back together. Thanks for any help!

The cables are no problem, Just order new ones! The wire harness is a little more difficult but it's very simple if you don't let it get to you. Look for my post in this thread

I described what I did step by step to install my new bars.

I changed my stock bars to mini-apes. It took me about 10 hours. (I can't help it I'm slow). Extending the wiring harness took me about 2-3 hours and I work in electronics so soldering for me is easy. My cost was around $425 for the bars, cables, handgrips, etc. It is really a job that anyone can do, just take your time, and ask for help if you get stuck on some point. I thought I could remove the tank to protect the paint. There was so much thread lock on the tank bolts that the wrench slipped out of my hand and chipped the paint. No matter how careful you are cover that tank! Having done it I am glad I didn't pay the dealer $1K for the swap.

manual would be good to have for the wiring diagram (color code)

and just take your time with it,really not all that hard to do,plus save all the money for other stuff.
hope it works for you.

Thanks for the input everyone. These tips will help a lot. I never would have thought to do something as simple as cover the gas tank! Its going to be a little while before the bars are in, I will let you know how it goes and post some pics too.
