rode my bike to work today, parked it and noticed i have oil leaking out of the rocker box. rear left corner of the rear cylinder. rode it home and its still leaking. i switched to amsoil 1000 miles ago. people told me it will find a leak....well i guess it did. i dunno maybe i just have bad luck. bought the bike a little more than 1/2 year ago so the dealer will hopefully take care of it even though i switched oil companys. have any of you all had to deal with this and what was the result?
Im gonna take a guess and assume your bike is fairly new with less than 15K. Rocker box gaskets from factory are bad. Dealer will install newer design gasket under warranty.
If it's under warranty they'll fix it. I had one leaking and the dealer did both while they were at it. Oil type was never mentioned, I run amzoil also
ya its an 08. bought it new, just turned 6000 miles. i feel a little better now knowing some of you have went through this.
because i am always trying to learn new things, does anyone have pictures of what the original gaskets look like and what the new ones look like. and maybe point out why it is improved.
and also did harley publish anything about this, maybe as a recall like they did with the handlebars on the wide glides?

you say; ".. people told me it will find a leak....well i guess it did."
Is that a common occurance?
I'm planning on switching to synthetic oil this Spring but I'll reconsider if it'll "find a leak".
Rocker box leaks on later Sportsters is a rather common occurance. there are posts on here about it all the time. Dealer should definately cover that. Its not a big job either they will probably have you back on the road the same day if not within the hour... good luck.
I had a rear rocker box leak on my 96 sportster after 20K miles. An indy charged me less than a $100 and it was still going when I traded it off with 52K.
Chips- sorry about that line. i am a firm believer in synthetics. ive ran syn in every vehicle ive owned. im 22 so ive only had two vehicles and this is my first bike. i work at an auto part store and i tell anyone that wants to listen to switch to syn because of longer intervals and lower temps.
i was with my dad one day checking out the indys and the local harley dealers. he asked every person we talked to what they thought about syn oil (partially to **** me off because he knew what they were going to say lol) and everyone of them said syn will make the roller bearings slide rather than roll, and that it will find a leak. but then they quickly recommended whatever they had on their shelf was the best oil around.
i heard so many ridiculous things esp from a harley salesman who said he runs nothing but straight 60 weight in his bike and that he doesnt believe in multi grade oils. that oil is back in the shovel head days lol.
sorry about the rant but i went though so much crap that day and then to now find a leak kinda made me mad. but now i know its not the oil, and that it is a common occurance. my motor runs strong and runs cooler so im satisfied.
