I can get a pretty good deal on an '05 883 XL Custom and I'm thinking about a conversion to a 1450. An 88" Big Bore Kit is offered on the website below for a little over a grand. Has anyone done a conversion to an 88"? Any advice?
If you have access to a machine shop and you do this type of work it's not too bad. If not it will cost a boat load to have the required machine work done to do the 88" kit install. The whole motor must be torn down and the cases have to be bored to the max.
Allow me to tell you what happened to me at the dealorship today. I got a quite for my 883 to get converted to a 1200. And the labor was 18 hours. Plus parts it ran 2700 big ones! I'd do it myself if it wern't for my warranty. So that hopefully gives you an idea. But that engine would be huge on a sporty and you'd fly!
Ok I think the 1450 conversion has been ruled out. I don't think I want to go to the time, trouble and expense of having the case bored out and a total rebuild.
But $2700 for a 1200 conversion??? 18 hours labor??? Were they just boring out your existing cylinders or did that include new ones? And why would that take 18 hours? It's not like they are rebuilding the Taj Mahal. I'm assuming that included installing high-flow heads, rejetting the carb and installing a high-flow air filter. New exhaust? What else would be involved in a 1200 conversion???
It included Boring out the Cylinders. (05 model) new pistons, (a cam set for 324 bucks.) so without that take 300 from 2700 lol much cheaper haha! ~not. Anways also includes gaskets, shimes, and re-jet. No heads sadly. He said it would just cost more. And thats the reason they dont do it so often is because of the price.
