I noticed some darkish brown streaks on my chrome primary case this morning and after a closer look, I noticed oil leaking from the top of the rear cyclinder. Its only been about 6 months since it was in for warranty work to replace the bottom gasket of the rear cyclinder. Im fortunate that my bike is still under warranty. I have only had it a little over a year and a half. Being a new rider and this being my first bike and it being a Harley, I have heard the remarks and snickers from metric riders who ride me about riding a oil leaker. Up until i had the first gasket replaced, I defended my bike saying it dont leak oil. I guess im wrong and they have a point. It saddens me that we as americans cannot build a dependable product. I guess the rest of the world may have a valid point when they say, americans are no longer good craftsmans only good consumers who rely on the rest of the world to supply goods for our consumption. Its really a disheartening shame. My bike is an 07 XL1200C with 8900 miles.
That's too bad, I'd still rather a leaky motor with heart than a non leaky squeeky/squealy thing.
It would be nice to have the best of both worlds but that seldom happens in life.
Well, as you say that though, it dosen't mean that every harley fits that, I have an 06 with 10500 miles, and it leaks nothing. I am sure there are just as many jap bikes out there that leak here and there, but they are not the ones the stereotype is directed to.
I feel your pain, and I'm fortunate that my bike hasn't suffered any mishaps yet. People are gonna raize you anyway you look at it. Just smile, shift down to first, and speed away...
Yeah, a little problem with the oil leak but you can get it easily fixed. To those who question having a harley, just smile, turn the throttle a little and ask them which bike they would rather have. Let the bike do the talking.
2006 1200C. 14000 miles. No leaks. Had a few carb problems. Thats it. I agree with you part of the way Spur. America is the greatest country in the world. But I'm worried about the direction the country is headed in. Dollar aint worth a dollar. It cost more than a penny to make a penny! What the hell? But I'd still rather be here than anywhere else. The people that make fun of Harleys wish like hell they had one. I'm glad they dont. If everyone had one it wouldnt be the same anymore. So cheer up. Your in the greatest country in the world, might be broke, but its still great.
NOt really worth getting all worked up man. Harley had a problem with the rocker box gaskets. It is a common thing on the later sporties. Usually after they are replaced with the new gasket, they are trouble free.
nahhh im dealing with it. No other bike sounds or looks like a harley. Im sure glad i bought the third year of warranty which includes tire and wheel coverage for the first 2 years too. Not counting this service, i have already broken even on what it cost me. Something for the people who are thinking of buying extended warranty to consider.
06 883 14,000k no problems. Do the work yourself and then you will know that it was done right. Did you just try tightening the bolts, that works sometimes.
Just replace the gaskets still under warranty. They had a seeping issue with the rocker box covers both top and bottom. I did it on my Sporty and had no problems afterwards.
