Default Neutral Light

Is there a way to install a neutral light in my '75 XLCH? If not, is there an easy way to find neutral. I am having a heck of a time finding it all the time. These xmssn's go one down three up right?

There's no easy way to install one. Gotta remember your bike was built before the gooberment got overly involved 'cause a buncha idiots started hurting themselves when they shouldn't have been on anything bigger than cousin Lou-Lou's tricycle.

It is 1 down & 3 up. If you are having trouble finding neutral, make sure the clutch is adjusted properly. If the clutch drags even a wee bit it can make it difficult to find neutral. Then try this technique; when you are in first gear, lift the shift lever slowly while just barely easing out the clutch lever. Often this will allow things to line up and pop into neutral. BTW, this also works when trying to get into first gear on a recalcitrant tranny.

Something else; Sporty trannies have fairly weak shift forks. If they get bent it becomes hard to find, and sometimes stay in, gear.

There is also a kind of popping sound the clutch makes as I squeese it to about the 90% point. Is this normal?

Doesn't sound normal. Does it do it just sitting there, without engine running, only when running, or both? Could it possibly have a kink in the cable? Could also check the ball-and-ramp assembly, and the throwout bearing.

Does it without the engine running. Not sure if it does it running because the engine is so loud I would not be able to hear it if it did.

So you can hear it, but not feel it?

Cant really feel it. I supppose it does it with the engine running as well. I squeese the clutch and it will pop just before I squeese it all the way in. Could this be related to the rattleing sound the left side of the engine makes when running and the clutch is released?

I'd hazard a guess that they are one and the same.
