Well…it was nearly 70* here today. Sooooo with the kiddos in school and the wife at work, guess what I did? Ok the answer to that is a no brainer. After about 95 miles of scooten’ around I pulled back into the garage. I’m standing there looking over the bike when I noticed black soot around where the crossover pipe (I think that’s the name of the gizzmo) connects into the rear muffler. I look closer and even though I’m still uneducated in these matters it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the seal is bad. I called the dealership and they can have me in first thing in the morning to do this warranty repair. Not a real big deal, but these little “problems” are a pain in the a$$!
Here is a question that popped into my head though. I’m looken’ to put on a set of V&H slip-on’s real soon. I know I would be messing with this thing (crossover pipe). While I was looking at everything it seems to me that I have to take the heat shields off of the pipes in order to swap out the muffs. Am I right or am I looking at it wrong? I say that because it appears that in order to remove the muffler you have to pull it out and off the crossover pipe and back off the header pipe all at the same time. It looks like the heat shield would be in the way of this process.
Yep, you will have to remove the heat shields and you will most likely have to loosen the header pipes. Also pick up a new pair of compression seals to replace the ones on the crossover pipe (they're cheap).
I removed the heat shield but did not loosen the header pipe, I did have someone hold the header steady while I was wiggling the muffler off just in case.
I found a set of used SE II's at local harley salvage To install removed the heatshields loosened the headpipe nuts removed stocker mufflers then unbolted headpipe replaced headpipe gaskets slipped on new crossover gaskets fit everything togather loose looked good tightened everything up All the new gaskets are cheap and only wanted to mess with this once
Just put on some V&H straight shots and it's fairly easy process. I did it without instructions and I'm not a wrench jockey.
The difference in sound is unbelievable. I had Screaming Eagle II's and I thought they sounded good until I put on the straight shots. No comparison!!!
Don't bother with getting the stock pipe warrantied, just get some v and h slip ons. You'll be asking yourself why you didn't do this when you got the bike.
