Default High idle, sometimes...

On my carb'd 2005 883 I find the idle sort of 'hangs' around 1300 rpm, or so - but only if I have been in stop and go traffic for a while. Eventually, maybe 15 seconds or so, it drops. If I come down from a blast on the highway or even after some distance of steady throttle, it seems to idle at around 1000, maybe a tad higher.

any thoughts? maybe a sticky throttle cable?

Maybe don't worry about it. Nothing is absolute, change in temperature, humidity, elevation, etc. Can effect how an internal cumbustion engine works Even EFI and a freaking computer ain't perfect. I will take conventionall aspirated anytime, at least I can firgure it out on my own without going to MIT In your case I don't think it is a problem the throttle and idle cable work in tandum. If you let go of the throttle and it snaps back nyou are good to go. In any case, invest in a repair manual. It has all the facts you need to know.

it's not injected and doesn't have a computer - it's carb'd.

If it stays at 1,000rpm it's too high anyway; although the 2005 manual says it should be 950 to 1,050 on page 1-51. Mine, which is a 1200 is set at 850 to 900 and stays there pretty consistently. I would be checking for vacuum leaks and making sure the enrighner is adjusted right.

if in stop and go, then it is the motor burning the extra rich condition out, if she comes back down on her own, it's ok. Make sure the throttle does snap back all the way, it it does, you should be good. There is a possibility that the idle might be a touch too high, do not adjust when it's cold or untill you know she's calmed down.

+1 Temp, humidity, elev. & barometric pressure all affect performance and as a result the idle speed. My idle speed varies some throughout the day depending on conditions and that's normal. Just don't set the idle speed so the engine spends time below 900 rpm, 950-1050 is the target idle rpm range. Evo engine oil pressures operate at low psi and it's best to keep the rpm above 900 to prevent inadequate oil flow at idle. Set idle RPM as called for in the Service Manual.

Yep, my idle speed varies quite a bit during the day. Particularly this time of year, when the temps may be in low 30's when I start out, then up in upper 60's and back down in the evening.
