Looking at forward controls for my '91 sporty. I have talked with a few friends who gave me some good advice, but couldn't give me suggestions on name brands or different specifications (degree of quality).
I would love to pay the $400+ dollars for Genuine Harley controls, but I would like to save some money for gas to put in it also.
I've been looking at Ebay and I see many types from $175 to $400. The problem is I don't know which brands are worthless and which ones might be ok.
My friends have told me that you can buy REAL cheap ones that don't work well and they will bind, the linkage is loose or they just fall apart. I really want to avoid this if I can get a dependable, replacement part company with a decent product.
I was also told that I could run into installation issues, depending on my exhaust. The attached picture is my exhaust and a view that might show if this will be a problem.
There are many uscrupulous guys on e-bay unloading junk that they don't even know what it fits. Go to a cycle shop and get some genuine HD or good aftermarket parts. It's worth the extra$$$ to not end up with someone else's junk. You will need to remove your front pipe and re install after your forward controls are on. Get a new gasket and retainer ring for the exhaust. It's fairly simple to remove the pipe. I installed my V&H pipes in about 1 hour. You will be pleased with the forward controls. They were stock on my 883XLC, but I know I could not ride without them. I tried som other sportys and dynas with mids and it just didn't feel right.
Thanks for the info. Yes, I have discovered all the junk on Ebay also. I really would buy the Genuine Harley controls, but as I stated in my original post - $400.00 is just too steep for me.
I love the forward controls on my other bike and when I go with the solo seat on my sporty, I want to have the controls on it also.
Guess I will just shop ebay until I can find someone selling their used controls. At least those would be genuine and not one of the many generics out there.
Check the catalog at midwest-mc.com they are a wholesaler of aftermarket parts and carry very high quality stuff. You cannot buy direct from them, but 99 percent of independant motorcycle shops purchase from them. If you find something you like just call your local shop with the part number and check pricing. Some of these parts are even better than HD OEM.
https://www.mandmcycles.com/homepage.htm give these guys a call. I should get money for plugging them all of the time, but he is real honest and gives a good deal on Harley forwards.
