Default n00b question about pipes

So I'm looking for some pipes for my Nightster, the V&H shortshots I've seen a bunch look sweet, and those Hooker Rebel Darksides are nice too. Now, if I get either, is there anything else I'm going to need to put them on? I was at the dealer today and the guy was selling me on an air cleaner, something else, something else, two hours on the dyno and basically I was up to $1,500 bucks total or something. I don't know if that's an upsell or what, I'd be happier just putting the pipes on if I can do that.

thanks in advance.

What he wanted you to buy was a highflow air cleaner, a screaming eagle race tuner or similar fuel management system, and some dyno time to go with your pipes. He's right.
You can run the bike with just the pipes, but it's not good for it to do it for too long. If you do the air cleaner, you need to re-do the electronic fuel map. There are two ways to do it, a plug-and-play power commander/fuel pack, or a SERT. That's where they dynotune the bike. I don't regret spending the money a bit.

Yep, exactly. K good to know, I'd rather wait and do it right when I can afford it than just fire it off to have black pipes. thanks!

Just putting the pipes on won't hurt a dang thing and I don't care how long you run it that way providing you don't change the intake. I ran my 1200 with pipes only for almost 10,000 miles before getting an intake and having to re-jet (map in your case). The bikes come lean from the factory and changing the pipes really won't effect that. However, when you change the intake and the pipes the bike will want to run even more on the lean side and this isn't good, which is why there is a need for the new jets or map profile.

I put on the Rebel Midcuts and just had to dial in the carb a bit to get away from the lean side of things. The new injected computer-ma-bobs auto tune for small changes like that dont they? Altitude and what not? I agree with The Crapshooter, just pipes and you should be fine.

I got my Power Commander III, V&H SS on line and the SE intake at the dealer. Buying the pipes and PC on line saved me $250. The PC III came pre mapped for my bike and modifications. I put it all on in about 3 - 3 1/2 hours myself. Never worked on a bike before, but plenty of cars. All total, paid $725. When I get home I'll dig out the reciepts cause I don't remember who I got the stuff from. It is an all or nuttin deal though. Your FI bike will not run right if you don't do all.

Well dudes, I got some chrome shortshots (from panic_fan's homie on here, by the way) and spent the last couple hours putting them on. After some creating some new curse words, dropping a nut into some kind of abyss and hopefully not cross threading anything they are all on. I just started laughing when I started it at about 11:45 pm mind you. My neighbors are going to hate me, but goddamn those things sound amazing. Went on little 40 minute jam around town...too fun. Now I'm gonna look into some AC and fuel management options then I'm done.

For now. Thanks to everyone in this thread who helped out, and all the resources on the board, it's all been a good learning experience so far. cheers!

I was really happy to get my Harley, but the first giggle and crazy grin was when I fired it up after putting on V&H slipons.

Me too, and that was 8 months ago. I still get that crazy grin when I twist the throttle!
