Question A little more zip

I just picked up a 2001 Sportster 883 and I'm wondering what I could do to get a little more pick up speed. It's a great bike but I would like to beef it up a little bit. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks.

Also could do the 1200 kit, probably be the best for the buck.

I'm not exactly technically inclined and I have to plead ignorance here. What exactly does an air cleaner do?

The bike has Screaming Eagle exhaust but that's about it. How do air filters differ and how much difference would changing just the filter make? For example, if I got a Screaming Eagle air cleaner vs. a Big Sucker? They obviously sit differently on the bike. I would assume the Screaming Eagle or forward facing air cleaners would be best but I'm not sure. How difficult is it to upgrade my carburetor and change it out? I also assume that you don't want your bike running too rich or too lean but in the middle for maximum performane, correct? Last question right now I guess would be by changing the air filter and carburetor, how does that generally affect mileage?

Thanks for all the input. I'm new at doing mods!

You don't need to change out the carb. There's nothing wrong with the stock carb, and it can handle your engine say up to around 100 HP. Since you already have the SE slip-ons, you'll just need to re-jet the carb once you change the AC to a higher flowing one. Any open element AC will do, and you really will not notice a huge difference from one high flow AC to another....But you will notice the difference from the stock AC to the high flow AC. Just pick a style of AC that you like. Mileage will go down slightly with the high flow AC due to re-jetting to add more fuel due to increased air flow in, but not drastically....Although that also depends on how heavy you are on the throttle.

Thanks for the feedback. What exactly does re-jetting the carb mean? What type/brand of AC are you using or would recommend?
