Get a buddy to hold the bike up, grab some vise grips and get ready to cuss. lol 
If you have a muffler spring tool like they use on quads or a brake spring tool it will be a lot easier. Still do able with visegrips.

Put the spring in a vise, bend it over and slip nickles in all the open spaces that you can get in. Put the spring on with the stand up. When put the stand down the nickles will fall out or be easily removed.
Also, did it pop off when you maybe hit something? If so, it is probably bent and you will likely need a new spring.
