Default Sideshots install Problems?

Has anyone had any issues installing Vance and Hines Sideshots? Spent 2.5 hours this morning trying to mount mine and couldn't get them to line up. Damn flanges kept hitting the cooling fins. Called the dealer I got them from and spoke to service. They said take the heat shields off. Tried that but then couldn't get the pipes to fit and seat against the ports on the engine. Finally I took the flanges back off and tried to see if I could at least seat the pipes against the exhaust ports. Come to find out that the pipes don't fit up against the exhaust ports. Seems like they are a 1/2" off. The distance between the pipes is too close by about a 1/2" or so. Has anyone experienced this? Unlike the shortshots the sideshots are welded together. Harley can only tell me that per the item number on the box, I have the right pipes. Vance and Hines web site says I have the right box, part 46035. Only thing I can find on the pipes is back on the lower mounting brackets, there is a stamp that says D367FC. Figures that V&H isn't open on the weekends. Hell, who works on their own bike on the weekend anyway?! I'm almost tempted to cut apart the pipes and see if I can mount them up individually. I figure that since the pipes mount to the engine and the bracket down at the bottom, each with two bolts, it would be enough to hold the pipes. Can anyone help me out here?

So, after all my typing, seems I need to try to pull them apart or hit them with a rubber mallet? Finally found something on the subject.

Found it. But, I must change some things about it. Tried using a rubber dead blow hammer but it didn't work. Damn pipes were still too narrow by about a 1/2". Finally I said that they are already wrong why not try to use two ratchet straps and pull the pipes apart by stringing them from the straps to two separate trees. Well, end result, worked like a charm! Finally made them the right size and got them on tonight. The plus side to it is that I was able to get the new screamin eagle gaskets vs. reusing my stockers. Gotta say, damn they sound awesome!

My dad and I had a hell of a time getting mine on over the winter. Like you said, they were half an inch off but after jiggling them and working on it for a while they feel into place. Glad you like them, I love mine!
They look bad *** and not a lot of people sport the sideshots.

Exactly why I wanted mine. Everyone has shortshots. Found em for $460 so I went with them. Love the sound and looks. Going to give Vance and Hines a bit of my mind tomorrow.
