Default Spitting and sputtering

So I've got an '87 883 hugger, I washed it friday, and since then it has been spitting and sputtering past 3/4 throttle, and over the past two days got worse until finally, it left me sitting this morning. No spark, none. Let it cool off for awhile, and still no spark. Brought it home, and started getting to the coil, and noticed the blue wire had come undone, so I hooked it back up (soldered it) I've got spark now, it's bright orange though, and not bright blue like I'd like it. I tried it out anyways, and it's still spitting and sputtering. I'm curious if anybody else has had this problem. Anywhere past about 1/4 throttle it's cutting out. Anybody know the coil test procedure? Any other ideas? I've noticed if I play with the throttle, i can get it to wide open throttle, but it doesn't have much power. I've already got a new coil coming from ebay, but I want to be sure there's not some other simple explanation. Any help is appreciated.
