Default small gas tank?????

i got an issue with my gas tank and the amount of gas it holds. i filled it up to the top a few days ago, and today the low fuel light comes on. however, as soon as i filled it up a few days ago, i reset my tach. when the light came on today, i checked my tach and it only said about 78 miles. so i call my local HD and talk to the guy at the service desk about my issue. he tells me that the nightster gets about 120 miles before a fillup. he also said that there is about 3/4 og gas left once the light comes on. so i go to fill it up and the max i can get is about 2.1 gallons not including the 3/4 gas sitting on the bottom of the tank. so if you add the 2 gallons plus the .75 gallons that should be about 2.75 gallons. if i'm correct, the gas tank on the nighty is a 3.3 gallon, so where is the difference on gas going to!!!! this is pissing me off cuz i feel like i'm losing gas somewhere!!!! riding about 80 miles before the light turns on is a little too early IMO....HELP ME OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's in there. 3.3 is correct. You do not have to fill it as soon as the light comes on, but on the wife's sporty I try to. If you have ever run out of gas on a motorcycle you will realize it is much easier to fill it up. Also realzie your mileage may greatly vary on highway and in town.

All the low fuel indicators turn on early. Forget it and use your trip meter instead. Just reset it every time you fill up.

I think you lose a little volume in the tank cause of the fuel pump in it.

+1, What ^^^^^^ he said. Yeah, it's a 3.3 gallon tank, but HD threw the fuel pump inside of it, which takes up part of that actual 3.3 volume.

Tav311, you are not alone, my low fuel light comes on religiously at about 80 miles, sometimes sooner just depends on how hard I am on the throttle. Like everyone says rely more on your trip meter. Just be a bit cautious when using that method though. I tried to stretch it between fill ups and got to around 110 miles. I was almost ready to start pushing it. I dreaded every stop because even taking off in at granny speeds my bike was sputtering and coughing. Interestingly it took only 2.8 gals to fill her back up instead of the 3.3. I was thinking the valve/sensor sat too high in the tank, but after reading the other posts about losing some displacement in the tank to other things makes more sense now.

Your tach measures distance? interesting, I didn't think Nighties even had tachometers....

The trip odometer is what you're using to measure distance on a tank of gas. Your bike has two trip odometers.

But, anyways, welcome to the wonderful world of owning an EFI Harley. Your tank holds the full 3.3 gallons, but the low fuel light comes on very early on these bikes and it's supposed to.

YOu see, inside the gas tank is the fuel pump that feeds the injectors - that fuel pump gets hot and it uses the gasoline in the tank to cool it. When the fuel level gets low, the pump gets hot and wears out faster.

I'm not a big fan of this arrangement, but it is what it is and there ain't thing one we can do about it. All we can do is live with it and focus on the parts of the bike that do make sense.

However, if you're like me and don't like being limited on fuel range - mount a TourTank on that bitch and put some real miles on. You don't need the mammoth fuel tank I carry, an extra two or three gallons will get you a long way down that road.

Mine turns on at about 80 also (with about another gallon in the tank) . I run it to 100 miles then fill up.

According to the manual.....low fuel light comes on at .8 gallons.

I use the trip and don't worry about it.
